History of Animal Testing

For a long while now, animals have been used for product testing in the medical field and the beauty industry. There is no need to argue the fact that we've made various improvements over the years, especially in medicine, thanks to this practice. However, in the 21st century, this method is unethical and outdated. The history of animal testing goes back a while; early greek physicians and scientists studied the world around them through animals. For instance, they dissected animals to better understand human anatomy, physiology, pathology, pharmacology, etc., which was called vivisection. In the 12th century, the idea of practicing surgical procedures on animals to practice skills was introduced by Ibn Zuhr, an Arabian doctor. Later on, in the 17th century, animals were used for psychological experiments. For a long time, it was believed that animals didn't feel pain, which justified human abuse towards them. The French philosopher, Rene Descartes, introduced this idea. It was only in the 19th century that scientists questioned whether or not animals could feel pain or not.
